Planning for the Application Trail

7 Year of planning. Raising kids, taking care of grandpa. Now it’s time to plan my trip on the AT. I’ve been hiking for several years, but I was never in a position like I am now.

Timing for Plan

My plan so far is to leave the first week of March 2022. I will visit my son Harley in Ft. Gordon Ga. Then I’ll have him drop me off at
Amicalola Falls Trail to the AT Approach Trail. This will be the start of my 2,193.1 Mile journey.

I don’t know exactly what I am going to do about equipment. I have plenty, but I am going to research it more during these next few months before I leave.  I’ll keep posting things here as I learn what I am going to do. If you have any siggestions please leave them in the comments below. 🙂

HOW TO WATERPROOF YOUR OLD BOOTS

This is a video on how to waterproof your boots. It’s really easy. Here is a list of cheap supplies you will need to waterproof your old boots.

Supply links from Amazon

  1. Paint Brush
  2. Bees Wax OR Paraffin Wax
  3. Petroleum Jelly
  4. Cedarwood Oil

eBay

  1. Paint Brush
  2. Bees Wax OR Paraffin Wax
  3. Petroleum Jelly
  4. Cedarwood Oil

Another thing that you can do that I did not bring out on the video is that you can heat your boots up in the oven before applying the mixture. This makes the mixture absorb even further into the material. You can repeat and polish several times to get a good watertight seal.

Rock Tunnel Hike | Marienville Pa | Minister Creek | Best Trails | ANF

This is a great hike in Marienville, it is a place north of town off of 666 called Minister Creek. We have been there a few times and always had great fun. There are thousands of huge rocks for the kids to climb on. There are rock tunnels for them to walk through. Great family fun!

does she make it?

Rock Tunnel Hike

We called this the “Rock Tunnel Hike” because they are not actually caves that you go into however I have heard some people call them caves as well. Check out some of these pictures of the kids on the hike.

Directions To Minister Creek

Go north out of Marienville Pa on route 66. When you come to 666 which is also called Blue Jay Road make a left. Go about 6 miles to the T and make a left. Follow the signs to Minister Creek.

OWLS NEST HIKE PENNSYLVANIA | ALLEGHENY NATIONAL FOREST | MARIENVILLE PA

The Owls Nest hike in Pennsylvania is an easy hiking adventure here in Pennsylvania. If you are into hiking the not so normal areas and the unbeaten path then this hike is for you. If you would like directions to this hike please comment below in the comment box.

What To Bring On Your Owls Nest Hike

Bring water and something to eat. You can make this a day hike, it is not that long. You have to park and then walk about 5 miles to get to this epic area to camp. Make sure you bring bug spray if you are going in the summer months. There are also bear there so bear spay would probably be a good idea.

Warning & Caution About Where We Camped

We camped down on the creek. As you can see in the video we had a flash flood to deal with the next morning. Make sure that you are on higher ground when camping down there.

Vegetation In The Owls Nest Area

I found some Boneset, lots of it. It was used to set bones back in the old days. It was also used as a pain reliever. There are acres of bone set there and I am excited to harvest it there this fall.
